DESCRIPTION:http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/2014/Canada/Kitchener/TWC/\n
\nIn a time when our lives are increasingly dependent on technologies\, it
is important we take the time to consider the impact of technology on our
lives\, and the importance of ensuring technology isn't used to limit us\
, but rather to take us further along a path of opportunity\, innovation a
nd freedom for all people.\n\nThe Working Centre (TWC) and the Kitchener-W
aterloo Linux User Group (KWLUG) are teaming up to offer presentations on
why Freedom in choosing and using your software is important\, and how Fre
e Software is really more about User Freedom. This year there will be a wo
rkshop on installing security and privacy software\, and a workshop on wr
iting your own software. And\, of course\, there will be an all-day Free S
oftware Installfest at Computer Recycling.\n\nThis year Software Freedom D
ay will feature a Film Festival of Free Culture movies\, and movies about
Free Software. Stay tuned for a complete schedule!

stallfest\n\nInstallfest\n\nOur installfest will be held all day. Bring yo
ur computer and get some assistance in configuring or installing free soft
ware on your system (Windows\, Mac or Linux). We can also help you install
a GNU/Linux distribution on your computer (Xubuntu 14.04 or Fedora 20 by
default\, but other distros are available).\n\nIf you do not have a comput
er (or do not have a computer to spare for a GNU/Linux distribution) then
computers will be available onsite for you to build and take home. These c
omputers will cost $20 with a monitor or $0 without. Here are the basic sy
stem specifications:\n\n HP dc7100 small form factor machine\n Penti
 um 4 processor running at 3GHz\n 40GB IDE hard drive\n 1GB DDR1 RAM
 (4 x 256MB sticks)\n Keyboard\, mouse and power cables \n\nWe will help
you put together your computer and install Xubuntu 14.04 or Fedora 20 on
it (or other distros\, depending on volunteer availability).\n\nThere will
be some other components available for an additional charge\, including:\
n\n CD/DVD ROMs (no\, we're not trying to be cheap. The dc7100 machines
have only one molex connector\, which is used for the IDE hard drive)\n
More memory\n Bigger hard drives \n\nPreregistration is not required
for the installfest\, but people who preregister are guaranteed spots/mach
ines. Preregister by emailing sfd at kwlug.org\n\nWe do reserve the right
to limit quantities\, so do not get ridiculous. There is no warranty for t
hese machines (and no post-event support through the Working Centre\, alth
ough there are other places to turn for help). \n\nThe Installfest takes p
lace in Computer Recycling\, 60 Queen Street South\; enter the door on Cha
rles Street beside the ceramic mural.
