About Software Freedom Day

On the third Saturday of September every year, people all over the world celebrate Software Freedom Day. It's a day when free software developers and users raise awareness in their local community of the benefits that software freedom brings. Some cities have huge events with music, talks, vendors, even cheerleaders, parades, and feasts. This year, we HNLU-CG-GOSSIP from HNLU Raipur are preparing for the celebration of software freedom day (SFD). we plan to spread awareness about FOSS (free Open Source Software), its usage, availability, and security.

Objectives of Software Freedom Day

• to celebrate software freedom and honour the people behind it

• to foster a general understanding of software freedom, and encourage adoption of free software and open standards

• to create more equal access to opportunities through the use of participatory technologies

• to promote constructive dialogue on our rights and responsibilities in the information society

• to create a platform for organizations and individuals that share our vision

• to promote and popularize open source software system, cyber security and cyber Laws through organisation of seminars and conferences.

What is Software Freedom and Why is it Important?

Proprietary software takes control of user's computer away from the user and gives control to others through Digital Restrictions Management (DRM). It takes away one's freedom to use, copy, understand, and improve the programs. Free Software gives those freedoms back. Specifically, free software guarantees users four essential freedoms:

• The freedom to run the program for any purpose

• The freedom to study how the program works, and change it to make it do what the user wishes to do (access to the source code is a precondition for this)

• The freedom to distribute copies so that one can help his/her neighbour and friends

• The freedom to redistribute copies of the modified versions of software to others. By doing this, the user can give the whole community a chance to benefit from the changes brought in the software by the users (access to the source code is a precondition for this)

HNLU-CG-GOSSIP Goals:

• Educate

• Advocate

• Supply

• Support

• Unite

Many of the world’s largest and most reliable platforms are built using free software. Some of the typical applications used by people every day without realizing the fact that they are based on open source technology include Google, Twitter and Facebook.
