= The Working Centre = The Working Centre is a Kitchener-based not-for-profit community organization that helps people in a variety of ways: job searching, refurbished bikes, community kitchen, thrift shop and computer recycling. We hosted the Kitchener Software Freedom Day in 2008, 2009 and 2011. == Date == '''Please note:''' ''Due to many other events being held on September 15th, 2012. The Working Centre has decided to hold our Software Freedom Day 1 week later, September 22, 2012.'' == Location == Location(s): Presentations will be at the back of the Queen Street Commons at 43 Queen Street South in downtown Kitchener, Ontario. The installfest and CD/DVD giveaway will be held at Computer Recycling, 66 Queen Street South. Use the Charles Street entrance. == Presenters == The following people have offered to present topics related to software Freedom: === David Carr: Make Your Own Freedom By Writing Your Own Software === Frustrated that there just doesn't seem to be a program or app that does exactly what you want? Maybe there is, but it does a lot of other things too that just get in the way. Maybe you just can't see paying for something so trivial. "I just want it to... How hard can that be?" The answer may be, "Not so hard." Writing your own software has never been easier. Together we'll look at a few programs I wrote for my own personal use and how you can go about creating your own. === Stefan Chirila: TBA === === Joseph Wennechuk: TBA === Are there any requests for topics? Perhaps we could try to put together a list? I was thinking I could present on my experiences transitioning from Manufacturing work to IT, and how; learning using Linux, and free software. I have been able to obtain tools, documentation, and community that are unsurpassed in quality and quantity. I have learned more at KWLUG, and other local events than most of my schooling, and it was free! I spent $20,000 at TriOS, but my Linux training has shown me how things really work. It is by far more valuable than my Microsoft certifications. If this it too broad, or not "ON TOPIC" enough, I could demo a introduction to almost anything if someone wanted a more hands on demo of a specific tool. Does this sound like something people would like to hear === Bob Jonkman: TBA === Bob is interested in presenting one of three topics: * !LibreOffice Basics * Linux Basics * What is Software Freedom? === John Eddie Kerr: The Economics of Free Software === == Help Out == We are actively looking for volunteers who can help with the install-fest, who want to prepare materials about free software, or talk about using free software. We will also need volunteers to help with setup, takedown and logistics on the day of the event.
