= Rugby Linux Users Group = Rugby Linux Users Group, in association with the Benn Partnership Centre, credativ and OpusVL, is holding an event for Software Freedom Day in the afternoon of September 17th 2011, to be held at the Benn Partnership Centre, Railway Terrace, CV21 3HR. The event will run from 12:00 to 16:00, with visitors from local schools in the area invited to attend from 11:00 onwards. == Introduction == Our event is part of the global SFD initiative – a worldwide demonstration and celebration of Free and Open Source software, with over 100 countries taking part. The goal is to educate the public about the many benefits of using high quality Free and Open Source software (FOSS) at home, in education, business, government, ... in short, everywhere! Interest in free software is enhanced with the current economic climate, which is affecting all sectors including business, home and education. More details about the Software Freedom Day initiative can be found here: http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/ At the free event, there will be representatives from the Free and Open Source software (FOSS) community, as well as from local ICT companies who specialise in FOSS for the home, education and business. Informal and free advice for existing and prospective users will be available, with the opportunity to arrange further sessions if required outside the event. == Free Software == There will be an opportunity to try out various free software applications on both Microsoft Windows and Linux platforms. Visitors will be able to pick up information on the solutions and take away CDs and memory sticks loaded with software. Free "Live sticks" will also be available, which enable a user to safely try out free software (such as the Ubuntu operating system) on their computer when they connect the memory stick. When the memory stick is removed, their computer will restart in its normal state – the safest and best way for users to try out before committing. == Who’s Invited? == Absolutely anyone can attend Rugby Software Freedom Day, from individuals who want to know how FOSS can be applied to their home computers, to large organisations, charities and government representatives. Members of the education sector will be invited earlier at 11:00 to discuss their needs on a one-to-one basis with specialists and are welcome to stay for the whole event. Local media have also been invited to cover the event and there will be light refreshments available, as well as the opportunity for a limited number of visitors to take away a free T-shirt if they advise us in advance of their visit. For people who cannot make it to the event but who are interested to learn more, information and free software can be posted out. == Get Yourself a Free T-Shirt! == If you would like to receive a free event T-Shirt, please call Gita Natarajan on 07752 980864 or email gita@cultivating-communities.co.uk to advise that you will be visiting Rugby’s Software Freedom Day at the Benn Partnership Training Centre Railway Terrace, Rugby, Warwickshire, CV21 3HR on 12:00 on the 17th September 2011. == Want to Volunteer? == If you would like to help out at the event, please join the Rugby Linux Users Group mailing list.
