About Us

Manchester Free Software (MFS) aims to promote the free software philosophy, centred in Manchester. We provide a friendly and accessible community to learn about and discuss free software.

Our Aim

Our aim for Software Freedom Day (SFD) is to engage with and encourage personal computer users, local businesses, government bodies and other groups to use of free software and promote the philosophy.

SFD2010

Preparations are under way for SFD2010 in Manchester. The date and venue have been arranged. We have organised several activities and helpers. We are arranging more activities and helpers.

SFD2009

Below was a our plan for SFD2009, and the results, which show it was a great success. We hope to make SFD2010 as good, if not better!

Event Plan

• Live demonstrations showcasing some of the best free software available.
• Talks and advice from local free software experts.
• Workshops conducting computer recycling and GNU/Linux installations.
• Free software and other giveaways.
• Free culture and free media exhibitions.
• Refreshments, in the form of fair-trade beverages, biscuits and cake.
• Literature and merchandise on sale.

Venue

The venue for this year's event is the School of Computer Science at the University of Manchester; appropriately the birthplace of the world's first stored-program computer - the Manchester Small-Scale Experimental Machine (SSEM) nicknamed “Baby”. The main event will take place in the Kilburn building on Oxford Road [ Open Street Map | Google Maps ], a building named after one of Baby's creators, Tom Kilburn. Doors will be open from 10am to 4pm.

Socialising

Following the main event, celebrations are expected to continue throughout the evening where food, drink and fun will be top on the agenda. Venue to be confirmed.

The Aftermath

The evidence is clear, Software Freedom Day in Manchester was a huge success!

A big thank you to everyone who attend and participated in the event, especially Graham and Owen from the University of Manchester for their help securing the venue, Alan from the MDDA for helping to publicise the event, Dan Lynch of Rathole Radio for the production of the SFD09 Free CD, Janey from Marbella Cafe for supplying the food, Des from Green H for setting up Armagetron Advanced (amongst other things), Charles also from the the University of Manchester for this network support, Mark White from the MDP for his Moodle demonstrations, Bob and Jon from Stockport Hackspace for bringing their robots, Jane and Joe who helped out on the day and Michael, Luke and Leslie from Manchester Free Software for organizing the event.
