SFD:

BUCC Software Freedom Fighters

BRAC University Computer Club (BUCC)

We, BRAC University Computer Club (BUCC), are proud to announce that we are going to observe the Software Freedom Day (SFD) 2010 independently as an University for the first time in Bangladesh. The event will take place at BRAC University on 21th November 2010. Our SFD team is named “BUCC Software Freedom Fighters (BUCC SFF)”. In celebrating this day, we decided to be the first in the country to play it solo yet to be live. This day marks the freedom granted by the open source software and free software worldwide and the simplicity that comes along the software. Our main goal is to make people familiar with free software. Increasing the awareness among students about benefits, privacy, user friendliness and endless opportunities with FOSS in both education and professional life.

Software Freedom Day (SFD) is a worldwide celebration of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). Software Freedom Day is a global, grassroots effort to educate the worldwide public about the benefits of using high quality FOSS in education, in government, at home, and in business -- in short, everywhere!, the importance of software freedom and the virtues and availability of Free and Open Source Software. The vision of SFD is to empower all people to freely connect, create and share in a digital world that is participatory, transparent, and sustainable.

BRAC University Computer Club (BUCC), being established in 2001, consists of very enthusiastic students and teachers who have made all efforts to make themselves as well as all other students ready for the challenges of the 21st century. This is a semi-formal gathering of students from any department at BRAC University, who enjoy getting together to discuss all about computers, information technology and how we can use these to solve our real life problems. We aim to provide students with different opportunities to satisfy their curiosity about computers and computer programming while at the same time cooperating with Bangla Localization and open source movements for rapid advancement of the whole Bangladesh and thus promoting understanding and enjoyment of computing.

This year, SFD has come back to remind us to unleash and explore the unlimited potential that we, people of Bangladesh have within ourselves. Right now, we have small scale farms and individuals who are outsourcing. In order to penetrate the global market in greater scale, we would need experts in FOSS. These experts may be programmers, may be developers, may be support personnel, or lawyers to advocate, business people to make FOSS projects fund itself, arts and humanities people to develop and localize contents and many more! We need FOSS aware people to cut costs in software firms, business organizations, educational institutions and even at the government level.

As a part of the celebration, there shall be two workshops, documentary show, film show, and different OS demonstration. First, we will discuss on what is FOSS. In workshops, we will focus on installation, usage and configuration of a Linux distribution such as Ubuntu and others free software. The students will be notified about the different free software available now for making their life piracy free. At end, there will be a quiz competition on FOSS as an inspiration for new users of FOSS. All participants will get participant certificate.
