Creating a New Team Page
This website is a wiki, so it is helpful if you know a little about wikis. That's the bad news. The good news is that when you edit a page (not this one!) , you get to view it before you save the changes. And you can always re-edit it. Read the following information carefully to help you set up a page without too much frustration.
Those are the necessary steps to create your Team page. Some of those steps will not be necessary for everybody. Read carefully and apply it based on your situation.
Wiki account creation
To start with you'll need to create an account on this wiki in order to be able to view and edit most of it. SFD is a great community and your account will help you to not only create and update your team page, but also participate in enhancing the community knowledge about running a successful SFD Event.
Simply go to this page.
Now that your account is created simply log in!
You're done with this step, welcome to the SFD Wiki!
Find it or build it!
The next step in creating your team page involves looking for your geographical location in the already created wiki pages. This has the benefit of making it easy for potential visitors for your event to find you. In order to do that you should go to the 2010 page and choose the continent where you live among the six listed and then navigate to your country. Note that here we're following the United Nations definition of continents and the Wikipedia definition of country distribution per continent.
Here start a bit of "complexity" if you came just to create a team page and your country isn't even listed! Well don't worry we'll give you through the process. Let's take a example to help you better understand. Imagine that the team we want to create is called "Antananarivo SFD" from Madagascar. If you're able to find your country you might want to skip directly to the next step
1. Country creation
So from the page 2010 we click on Africa and are unable to find Madagascar in the list. We scroll down to the bottom of the page where we find a text box.
Create the page
Simply type in the name of your country and validate by clicking on "Create country" button.
The next screen shows you an standard country template like this if you use wiki mode
and like this is you use the GUI mode
Note that you can switch from one mode to the other one without saving just by clicking on the "GUI mode"/"Text mode" button.
Add relevant information
So now you need to do your first editing using the wiki. You can easy use the GUI mode, which is great for doing copy&paste from other web sites, or wiki style. As mentioned above switching from one to the other is very easy. If you plan on using wiki style then look at HelpOnMoinWikiSyntax to discover all the possibilities that it offers.
A quick edit of this page will go like this:
Change SFD CreateYourTeampage into SFD 2010 Your Country Name, so here we will type "SFD 2010 Madagascar"
- Add a short description about your country. People often browse wikis trying to discover things and it's always a good idea to add useful but brief information
Go to Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yourcountry and you are sure to find what you need. For our case the link is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madagascar. Select the first, second or maybe third paragraph of introduction and copy it to the clipboard (CTRL+C)
- Go back to your SFD Wiki page and switch to GUI mode
- Place your cursor at the end of the now SFD 2010 Madagascar line and type enter.
- A new line will be inserted with your cursor at the beginning of this line
- Paste the content of the clipboard (CTRL+V)
- Save changes.
You're done!
Do not remove any other information from that page before saving, those will be very useful in the future.
City or Region creation
So you found your country but the region or city doesn't exist, or your created your country and you're now left with an documented but empty in terms of region/city pages. If your city or region already exist, you will want to go directly to the next step.
Create the page
Creating a city or region works very much like creating a country. Depending on the cultural environment people prefer to be found by either one which is why we're using both names (city/region) and let you decide what works best in your case. In you're from a country where you have a lot of SFD events already but just your city/region is missing you will have to scroll to the bottom of the screen. In our example, the country page is brand new and there is no city listed yet. The name of our city is Antenanarivo, yours will be different (most likely) and you just need to enter it in the text box at the bottom of the page like like on the screenshot below:
Once you have entered the name of the city (don't forget to use a Capital letter, it's always nicer) click on the "Create Region" button. The wiki will then automatically create a City/Region page based on the right template for you. And that page will look like this if you are in Text mode:
or like this if you use the GUI mode:
Add relevant information
As you can see from the template we have designed a zone to add a little description of your location. You can easy use the GUI mode, which is great for doing copy&paste from the web, or wiki style editing. As mentioned above switching from one to the other is very easy. If you plan on using wiki style then look at HelpOnMoinWikiSyntax to discover and learn all the possibilities that it offers.
A quick edit of this page will go like this:
- Change Your Region/City with Your region or city Name, so here we will type "Antananarivo"
- Add a short description about that location. Like explained above, it's always a good idea to add useful but brief information above your area.
Go to Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yourcity and you should be able to find what you need. A google search can also get your some description. Make sure you copy some text with reusable on a different website. In our case the link is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antananarivo. Select the first, second or maybe third paragraph of introduction and copy it to the clipboard (CTRL+C)
- Go back to your SFD Wiki page and switch to GUI mode
- Place your cursor at the end of the now Antananarivo line and type enter.
- A new line will be inserted with your cursor at the beginning of this line
- Paste the content of the clipboard (CTRL+V)
- Delete the line that says "Please describe your Region / City here. "
- Save changes.
You're done!
Do not remove any other information from that page before saving, those will be very useful in the future.
Creating your team page
So you're arriving at the main section. If you created the page, it will be empty with the two bullet points Team 1 and Team 2 (we'll get back to those). If not, there should be some existing teams listed in your city or region page. Do not worry about those yet.
The team page itself
Go to the bottom of the page to find the text box to create your team page. The box will look like this:
Once you have entered the name of your team click on the "Create Team" button. The wiki will then automatically create a Team page based on the team template . And that page will look like this if you are in Text mode:
or like this if you use the GUI mode:
Now just fill in your Team name and if you have no definite plan yet, just inform your potential readers that you're working on it. Maybe leave some ways to contact you if they are interested in joining your team.
Do not remove the CategoryTeam tag at the bottom of the page. This insures that your team gets listed in the team list page.
When typing text in Wiki mode you will notice that words with 2 capital letters in it such as OpenSource create an automatic link to a wiki page. This called CamelCase in wiki language and design to make URL linking and creation easy. If you do not want hyperlink to be create just add an exclamation mark in front of that term such as !OpenSource.
Note your team URL, you can see it in the navigation bar in your browser once you've saved it. Just remove the #preview at the end of. You will need 2010/Country/City/Team for the next section and the registration form.
updating the city/region page
Of course now you want your team to be listed in the region/city page from where your created your team, so people finding your region/city can find your team as well. So you now need to return to your region/city page. You can do that by clicking on the gray banner above your team name: you'll see your region/city listed right there.
Pressing the back button or back arrow from your browser will not work and ask you to resubmit the data you just submit. Another way can be to just remove your team name from the browser address bar and type enter.
From your region/city page click on the edit button. You have two way to do this:
- GUI mode: gives you the ability to do an automatic search on your team page
- Text mode: requires that you remember the direct wiki URL to your page as mentioned above
GUI Mode
- Clik on Edit (GUI) button
- Replace Team 1 by your team name
- Select your team name with your mouse and click on the hyperlink button from the toolbar like in the screenshot below
- Type your team name in the search box and click search (like in the screenshot above)
- Click on the drop down button from the search result and make sure you select the link with the full location to your page that includes country and city
- Click Ok
- Delete the Team 2 line (and the bullet as well)
- Do not change anything else
- Save
Do not remove the CategoryRegion tag at the bottom as it ensures that your region/city gets listed in the region/city page.
You are done! You now just need to complete the team registration with your team URL at hand! Remember that you only need to enter the part after 2010 in the form check box: so it should look like Country/City/Teampage
Text Mode
- Clik on Edit button
- Replace Team 1 by your team name
Make a link to that page by typing [[2010/country/city/teampage|Your team name]]
- Delete the Team 2 line (and the star as well)
- Do not change anything else
- Save
Do not remove the CategoryRegion tag at the bottom as it ensures that your region/city gets listed in the region/city page.
