Computers For Communities

In 2006, Statistics Canada reported that 56,000 households within the city of Ottawa were without a computer while 128,000 households did not have access to the internet. Although some of these households choose not to access modern technology there are many families that find themselves on the other side of the digitial divide.

The Ottawa Chapter of Computers For Communities (C4C) is a locally operated not for profit community organization striving to bridge the digital divide in Canada's National Capital Region of Ottawa and Gatineau. We provide refurbished computers, hands-on experiential education and job skills training in exchange for community service.

Computers For Communities advocates the use of affordable, reliable and accessible technology solutions including mature Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) in order to help.

C4C will be hosting a small get together to celebrate Software Freedom day and raise awareness about the digitial divide in Ottawa.

The event is coming together and will include the following features: * Friendly meet up * Pub Fare food and drink available * Demonstration of Ubuntu and other FOSS using refurbished laptops * Back issues of Linux Pro Magazine to check out * Small library of Live Linux CD's for visitors to try in their own laptops onsite * Live Distros to give away (We are trying to secure a source) * Located right across from the University of Ottawa Campus.
